 What is Scholarly Writing?

 

Telling stories isn't confined to fiction; it can be accomplished through different forms of writing, including scholarly writing. While scholarly writing doesn't tell stories in a traditional format, it tells stories of academic research and analysis. 

In this post, we are going to define scholarly writing, differentiate it from other forms of writing, and identify types of scholarly writing. 

What is Scholarly Writing? 

Scholarly writing focuses on "evidence-based arguments and logical reasoning to guide a reader's understanding of a subject" (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). Depending on the field of study, one might use scholarly writing to support their understanding of something or publish research findings. 

How is Scholarly Writing Different? 

What makes scholarly writing different from other types are characteristics such as, but not limited to (Academic Vs. Nonacademic Writing Styles | AJE, n.d.): 
  • Formal tone. 
  • Documentation of resources.  
  • Information is structured into introduction, methodology, and conclusion sections. 
On the other hand, non-scholarly writing has characteristics including, but not limited to (Academic Vs. Nonacademic Writing Styles | AJE, n.d.): 
  • Informal tone. 
  • Personal opinions. 
  • Less emphasis on research.
