TechTeacher September 24th, 2022 The Design Process By: Brisa Willis  The Design Process:     In instructional design, one can't just simply begin designing, there are steps that one must take to  ensure that the product is successful and that the intended audience benefits from what is produced.  The design process (depicted in figure 1) is a never-ending cycle that consists of the following steps  according to the DiscoverDesign Handbook (n.d.)...      Define  Collect Brainstorm & Analyze Ideas Develop Feedback Improve Each step is vital for instructional designers to use to support them as they navigate through their  projects. If instructional designers can use the design process then the project becomes more  manageable. The first step of the design process is to define. To have something to create you  have to determine the problem. Defining the problem can be achieved through data collection.  Instruct...

Step One of the ADDIE Model: Analysis

Can We Skip to the Good Part?       In instructional design, one can't simply skip to the good part, AKA designing. Some steps need to be put in place for one to create a meaningful product. Instructional designers go through a process called the ADDIE model, which supports and guides designers in making products that will positively impact their audience. The first step in the ADDIE model is analysis, however, what do instructional designers analyze? For instructional designers to have anything to analyze, they must complete a data collection. Instructional designers can collect data in the following ways according to Piskurich (2015)... Focus Groups : A focus group is a small gathering of individuals who are considered specialists in the information that instructional designers are trying to gather. The success of a focus group will depend on how well the instructional designer facilitates the group.  Interviews : An interview can be done either in person or o...

Teaching and Instructional Design

Transitioning from one field to another can bring one some fear because of the unknown, and the unknown is a scary thing. As I continue my journey through instructional design, there is a lot that I am learning that is similar to teaching. In chapter one of the book Rapid Instructional Design: Learning ID Fast and Right there were connections and thoughts I had after reading... Impression #1:      The process instructional designers go through to create their content is very similar to how teachers design their instruction for their subject area. Instructional designers must first determine what the goal is for their learners, similarly, educators must pick which standard/learning objective they are going to focus on, then after selecting that both instructional designers and educators design their instruction based off of the goal. Figure 1 illustrates Piskurich (2015) Instructional Systems Design Spiderweb Model, which illustrates that there is no right order for creati...

Can teachers be anything else but teachers?

Can teachers be anything else but teachers? While that may seem like a silly question, it is one that many teachers consider, and that question is what holds some teachers back from venturing into other realms. When you think of a teacher, many will say that teachers just stand in front of their students and teach the standards they are required to, however, that is far from the truth. Standing in front of students is only one out of the many things teachers do and become experts at. While going into technology might make a teacher laugh and say "Are you serious"? skills such as (but not limited to)... Providing differentiated instruction  Creating engaging and creative lessons  Using data to improve instruction  Verbal and written communication  Are all skills that teachers acquire and skills instructional designers need. The role of an instructional designer might be similar to the role of a teacher in the sense that instructional designers' role is to... Create ma...

Welcome

Are you a teacher wanting to leave the classroom, but unsure of where to go? Going into technology is a field that many teachers wouldn't even consider acknowledging, however, the skills teachers acquire in the classroom can easily be transferred to technology. Here at the TechTeacher blog, a lot of different topics will be discussed such as, but not limited to... The relationship technology and teaching have. Why teachers should consider going into technology.  How pursuing a technology degree can impact content being presented in the classroom.  How to integrate technology in the classroom.  Instructional design in the classroom.  The hope is that this blog informs, inspires, and encourages readers.   - TechTeacher
